There were echoes of last season from The Stones in this performance as some sloppy defending and lack of concentration saw them defeated on their league travels for only the second time this season.
Whilst Maidstone ‘s effort and endeavour could not be questioned, they did not really put Luke Woods in the Wealdstone goal under concerted pressure until the final ten minutes and by that point, it was too late after they had allowed the home side to capitalise on the opportunities that had come their way.
Just thirty seconds were on the clock when Marvin Sordell received the ball in the area with his back to goal and the Wealdstone striker twisted into space before sending his shot into the right hand side of the net.
The home side looked to build on their early advantage and on three minutes Graeme Montgomery shot wide before slowly, Maidstone began to work their way into the game.
On 11 minutes, The Stones came close to levelling the scores when Ian Selley swung in a corner from the right which was met by Neil Smith and Woods palmed the ball away.
Shortly afterwards, Bradbrook had a deflected effort just miss the target but this was the closest Maidstone came to scoring in the first half and just seconds after the restart they found themselves further behind. Ian Cox could not cut out a pass to Davis Haule who found Montgomery and the Wealdstone player showed why QPR had taken an interest in him earlier in the season as he riffled the ball past Andy Walker.
Then with 57 minutes played, Seb Schoburgh replaced Lloyd Blackman and James Pinnock was pushed up alongside Meshach Nugent and within a minute, the change had paid dividends as Pinnock fired in his ninth goal of the season with a low shot from the edge of the area.
Jay Saunders then should have pulled The Stones level on the hour mark but he headed wide when he had time to bring the ball down and this was to prove a costly miss as six minutes later, Wealdstone extended their lead. Selley’s attempted over head kick unfortunately handed possession to the home side and Haule smashed in his side’s third goal of the afternoon.
Nine minutes from time, Ryan Ashe’s effort hit the top of the bar before a number of long throws from substitute Aaron Lacy caused problems for the Wealdstone defence but Woods was alert and he denied Pinnock, Nugent and Saunders in quick succession.
However, Woods was finally beaten for the second time with just one minute remaining when Nugent scored with a looping header but it came too late for The Stones to salvage a draw from the game.
