The Stones beat The Stones this afternoon in a very
open, attacking and enjoyable game at Bourne Park. Wealdstone
were in fifth place in the table at the outset with
United in ninth but if Maidstone were to keep alive
any hopes of a play-off place a win today was essential.
Maidstone went ahead in the 11th minute with in form
striker Meshach Nugent adding to his tally for the year
as he profited from a mistake by Carl Martin. Nugent
dispossessed the defender before firing home confidently
beyond keeper Luke Woods.
Maidstone's lead was short lived though as the Middlesex
Stones drew level just three minutes later. A near post
corner from David Hicks was powerfully headed home by
the impressive Greg Ngoyi. Wealdstone continued their
attacking play and seven minutes later Andy Walker was
forced into a good save by Ngoyi as he comfortably went
past Peter Hawkins.
The Stones thought that they had taken a 29th minute
lead when Ryan Royston's header from a James Pinnock
corner was cleared from the line by Ryan Ashe.
Just before half time Jay Saunders had a strong header
which went fractionally wide of goal after good work
from Nathan Paul and then in first half stoppage time
a great run from Keiron Forbes was followed by a good
cross and Ngoyi narrowly failed to connect with a spectacular
diving header.
Wealdstone started the second half stronger than the
home side and a Hicks free kick was headed narrowly
over the bar by the immensely impressive Chris O'Leary.
The game's winning goal came after 61 minutes. Tom
Parkinson took a throw-in to Nugent who backed into
the penalty area despite close attention from defender
Lee Chappell. However, Nugent turned his marker with
skill and fired home a powerful, low shot beyond Woods
from an acute angle.
The visitors went with four men up front after this
but the central defensive unit of Hawkins, Royston and
Peacock were superbly sound and saw Maidstone home to
a deserved and impressive victory.
