Maidstone United’s miserable start to the season continues as they suffered their third defeat in a row, this time at home to Ryman Premier League new boys Bury Town.
Just like in the game against Hastings, The Stones started brightly and took the lead but once again they were left to rue conceding two poor goals shortly before half time.
On 17 minutes Tom Parkinson curled the ball into the box where it reached the leaping Ant Bodle but he could not direct the ball on target and then four minutes later Simon Glover’s header from a Simon Pettit free-kick dropped just wide.
However, on 23 minutes Maidstone opened the scoring when Colin Richmond’s corner caused a goal mouth scramble and the ball was eventually put behind for another corner. This time Richmond drove the ball to the back post where it was headed in by James Peacock.
Two minutes later, Adrian Stone connected with a Pettit throw but his header went wide and then Bury moved quickly up field only for Scott Chaplin to shoot straight at Andy Walker from the edge of the area.
Maidstone continued to create chances and on 29 minutes Richmond sent over another good delivery from a corner which was met by Stone at the near post but he flicked his header over the bar.
Then just like in the game on Tuesday night The Stones let in two quick goals shortly before the break. On 39 minutes the ball dropped to Tom Bullard inside the box and his miss-hit shot crept inside the far post. And then two minutes later Lee Reed’s drive from the edge of the area took a deflection as it evaded Walker in the Maidstone goal.
One minute before the break Bodle drew a good block from Bury keeper Marcus Garnham and then sixty seconds later Tom Mills’ header fell into the path of Sam Reed who fired over from a good position.
The Stones were fortunate not to fall further behind on 53 minutes when Scott Chaplin’s corner picked out the unmarked Neil Andrews but he failed to hit the target with his header and then two minutes later the visitors should have scored again but Maidstone somehow survived a goalmouth scramble.
Just past the hour Jake Hobbs surged into the box and found substitute Danny Hockton whose weak shot was comfortably held by Garnham and then on 75 minutes Stone cut into the middle of the pitch and hit a strong shot but it flew wide.
As the game moved towards full time, Pettit dragged the ball wide at the back post from a good position and then at the other end Walker made a good save to keep The Stones in the game with just a few minutes left.
Unfortunately though, with three minutes of stoppage time played, substitute Gonnella blasted the ball over the bar when well placed and with it went any hopes that Maidstone had of salvaging a point from the game.
