Maidstone United’s good run of form has been ended after they were narrowly defeated at home for the fourteenth time this season.
The Stones have picked up just five points at Homelands during this campaign and with only four games remaining, it is looking very unlikely that Maidstone will escape the relegation zone.
Both sides were lively early on and on four minutes Adam Burchell made good progress down the left hand side before sending over a dangerous cross which James Russell could only parry but the ball would not drop to a Maidstone player.
Sixty seconds later Canvey came within inches of taking the lead when Danny Heale’s rising shot cannoned off the bar before Heale went close again on seven minutes after the visitors had broken quickly following a free-kick from Tom Mills.
Five minutes later a deep cross towards the back post was meet by the sliding Leon Gordon but he could not divert the ball into the net and then on 14 minutes Gordon saw his cross come back off the cross bar.
After a busy opening spell there was then a lull in the action and it wasn’t until the 35 th minute that there was an effort on goal when Russell was called into action to parry Ellis Green’s free-kick over the bar.
Then two minutes later Green found Gary Wharton who tricked his way into the box and managed to find Alex Flisher who drove a low shot goalwards only for Russell to expertly dive to his right hand side and make a fine stop.
With half time imminent, Jason Hallett’s over head kick went just wide but Canvey did make the break through two minutes after the interval when a mistake from Simon Glover gifted Rob King possession and the Canvey player hit a superb finish from distance past the stranded Andy Walker.
Just after the hour Wharton found Green out wide who delivered a deep cross to Flisher on the back post but Flisher’s header was comfortably collected by Russell and then on 63 minutes Nathan Paul passed to Wharton who struck the ball towards the near post and Russell intervened with a flying save.
With eleven minutes remaining Ashley Dumas saw red for raising his hands at Green after an off the ball incident but despite having plenty of possession, The Stones could not make their man advantage pay.
