Maidstone United - a deaf friendly club

Maidstone United 1-2 Kingstonian
Tuesday 25 January
Ryman Premier Division
Attendance: 262
Reporter: Ruth Tunnell

A goal from Gary MacDonald four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game condemned Maidstone United to yet another miserable night at Homelands and the result means that The Stones have now lost three of their last five games.

Although this was a better performance than the display at Canvey on Saturday The Stones were once again made to pay for mistakes at the back and after battling back to draw level late on, they will be disappointed with the manner in which they conceded Kingstonian’s winner.

Maidstone started brightly enough and with just four minutes played Simon Glover released Adrian Stone who shot early and Rob Tolfrey comfortably stopped the ball.

Then at the other end Matt Gray’s free-kick into the box was headed down and Joe Dolan latched onto the ball in space. Dolan only had Andy Walker to beat but not for the first time this season, Walker made a superb save to keep the scores level.

Three minutes later, Maidstone went close when a curling effort from Jay Saunders just missed the top left hand side of the goal before the returning Nathan Paul found Stone on the edge of the area but his resultant shot was weak and did not trouble Tolfrey.

The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes though when Paul slipped as a cross came over from the right and it left Sam Clayton with the simple task of steering the ball past the stranded Walker.

There was a let off for The Stones five minutes later when a mistake from Danny Lye saw ex-Maidstone player Antonio Gonnella gain possession in a good position but he fired his shot wide of the left hand post.

One minute before the break Tommy Whitnell went close with an effort from distance before Paul stopped Maidstone falling further behind on the stroke of half time when he cleared the ball off the line.

Shortly after the interval Andy Ford replaced Lye with Danny Hockton and Hockton nearly had an immediate impact on 53 minutes but his shot deflected over the bar.

Maidstone were fortunate not to fall further behind with 59 minutes played when Laurence Harvey tried to shepherd the ball back to Walker but Gonnella nipped in to gain possession only to curl the ball over an unguarded goal.

Then with 12 minutes remaining The Stones equalised when Stone chipped the ball up to Hockton and his looping header cleared the line before being hooked out of the goal.

However, as the game moved towards full time Maidstone began to look increasingly nervous and with 94 minutes on the clock they conceded a corner and left the unmarked Gary Macdonald with the simple task of heading the ball into the net.
