Maidstone United’s lack of goals in pre-season continues to cause concern as they once again failed to hit the net against lower league opposition.
Just like Saturday’s game away at Thamesmead this was a close match between two evenly matched sides but The Stones did create enough chances to have nicked a win.
Three of those opportunities fell to Danny Hockton. On four minutes he burst forward from the half way line and shot from close to the edge of the area but he lifted the ball over the bar.
Then sixty seconds later, Hockton looked to be in an offside position when he took advantage of a defensive mix up to gain possession inside the box but he saw his effort well saved by the Romford keeper.
Hockton’s third attempt of the evening came on 25 minutes when Simon Pettit clearly handled the ball as he fell over and after regaining his feet he found the Maidstone striker on the edge of the area and this time Hockton shot at the Romford keeper.
At the other end Andy Walker was called into action a couple of times to make some good saves and then at half time, Peter Nott rang the changes as he sent on four of his outfield substitutes.
Two of these, Jake Hobbs and Adrian Stone, were involved on 51 minutes when Hobbs sent a delightful ball into Stone who dragged a weak shot wide.
Seven minutes later, Colin Richmond lifted a good ball into the box which was met by the unmarked Simon Glover but he steered his header the wrong side of the right hand post.
Then on 68 minutes Stone played the ball into Hobbs who put the opportunity wide from close range and this was the last time that Maidstone really threatened Romford’s goal.
