Maidstone United Veterans played their inaugural fixture
in the Ryman League Veterans' Cup on Thursday evening when
they travelled to Southwood to face their counterparts from
Ramsgate.
The Old Stones, who are managed by Les Apps, the former
Maidstone United goalkeeper from the late 1960's, put on a
superb performance to come away with a thoroughly deserved
3-0 victory.
Les Apps was extremely delighted with his side
and said "The standard of football was a bit higher than
we normally play in but my boys adapted really well and thoroughly
deserved the win. I'm absolutely chuffed with the results."
The scorers for The Vets were Lee Bobbit and Dave Simpson
who scored twice. Apps described the second of Simpson's
goals as "fantastic" as it followed great midfield
work from Russell Deadman who supplied a killer pass for Simpson
to find the net.
There were special mentions for Steve Clarke who performed
stoically at the back and a certain Terry Cordice who added
some bite and tenacity to The Stones side in a bid to counteract
the effect of Ramsgate's own "star player" Neil
Davey.
In the semi finals, Maidstone United have been drawn away
to Whyteleafe who accounted for Bromley Veterans in their
quarter final tie. The other semi final sees Tilbury entertain
Metropolitan Police. The date of the Stones' game is yet to
be decided but it must be played by Easter.

Alan Walker is predicting a tough Kent derby tonight
at home to Chatham Town, but has the benefit of choosing from
a fully fit squad this evening.
However Walker was anticipating a couple of changes; "Although
our last 3 games have been particularly tough, it's disappointing
that we have failed to get a goal from our strikers, so we'll
be giving Simon Austin a chance tonight which we hope will
produce the necessary goals, particularly as he's playing
against his old side. Whilst I fully expect us to get a result
this evening if we perform to our expectations, we are in
no doubt this will be a difficult game with them fighting
to avoid relegation. They have a few players returning tonight
and I know that they will be working their socks off, so we
will have to be at the top of our form to avoid this potential
banana skin."

Stones chairman Paul Bowden-Brown was presented with a
cheque for £3,718.50 before today's game.
The money was raised by a group of supporters who walked 42
miles from James Whatman Way to The Crabble at Dover last
month. Paul said: "I would like to put on record formally
my personal thanks and admiration to those supporters that
walked to Dover to raise funds towards our new ground. As
an ever-lasting tribute to these and others who have taken
it upon themselves to raise funds, I have made the decision
that their individual names and the form of their donation
will be placed on a wall of thanks within the new ground.
I once again thank you for your contribution and ensure you
that your personal commitment will help to ensure our long
awaited return to Maidstone - our true home."
Once again a big thank you to Geoff Hunt, James Ingarfield,
Chris Smoker, Paul Hawkins, Richard (Butch) Nott, Ben Ackroyd,
Dan Stewart, Steve Abnett, Dave Comfort and Ben Bardell for
their efforts.
12th March 2007. 8.30pm
The venue for our Kent Senior Cup tie away to Welling
United has now been confirmed. The game will be played on
Tuesday 20th March 2007 with a 7-45pm kick off at the home
of VCD Athletic.
Welling United are currently unable to play midweek fixtures
at Park View Road following the collapse of a floodlight pylon
in a storm in January. As a result of this accident, the club
were instructed by safety experts to remove the remaining
floodlight pylons as well, which has resulted in The Wings
playing several home game on neutral venues.
9th March 2007. 12pm
As the Stones travel to Molesey this weekend, Hume
and Walker are able to recall Jason Barton to the squad after
he missed last weekends game to attend a family wedding.
There is also good news on the injury front as Lee Shearer
could make a return to the squad this weekend after responding
well to treatment. He faces a late fitness test, which could
see him make a return on the subs bench.
Finally, if you can't make the trip on Saturday, there will
be live goalflash updates throughout the game on the Official
Website.

Maidstone
United joint managers Lloyd Hume and Alan Walker received
the Manager of the Month award for February before today's
match with Dartford.
It is the second consecutive month they have won the award.
The Stones were unbeaten in February and moved from a play-off
place to top of the table. The victory over the Darts took
the winning run to seven games - the longest winning streak
of any Ryman Division One South club this season.
The trophy was presented by Barry Simmons from the Isthmian
League.
