Ryman League Veterans' Cup (30/3/07)
Maidstone United Veterans played their inaugural fixture
in the Ryman League Veterans' Cup on Thursday evening when
they travelled to Southwood to face their counterparts from
Ramsgate.
The Old Stones, who are managed by Les Apps, the former Maidstone
United goalkeeper from the late 1960's, put on a superb performance
to come away with a thoroughly deserved 3-0 victory.
Les Apps was extremely delighted with his side and said "The
standard of football was a bit higher than we normally play
in but my boys adapted really well and thoroughly deserved
the win. I'm absolutely chuffed with the results."
The scorers for The Vets were Lee Bobbit and Dave Simpson
who scored twice. Apps described the second of Simpson's goals
as "fantastic" as it followed great midfield work
from Russell Deadman who supplied a killer pass for Simpson
to find the net.
There were special mentions for Steve Clarke who performed
stoically at the back and a certain Terry Cordice who added
some bite and tenacity to The Stones side in a bid to counteract
the effect of Ramsgate's own "star player" Neil
Davey.
In the semi finals, Maidstone United have been drawn away
to Whyteleafe who accounted for Bromley Veterans in their
quarter final tie. The other semi final sees Tilbury entertain
Metropolitan Police. The date of the Stones' game is yet to
be decided but it must be played by Easter.
