Invitational Cup 27/9/07
Maidstone United under 18s good form in this seasons
cup competitions continued on Thursday evening with
a resounding 5-0 victory away to Whitstable Town under
18 in the preliminary round of the under 18 Invitational
Cup.
The Stones following on from Monday evening's success
away to Bromley in the FA Youth Cup were ahead in
this match within the first two minutes.
Miles Cornwell combined well with Craig Roxburgh before
delivering a fine right wing cross which forward Danny
Brann dispatched with aplomb into the corner of the
Whitstable net to register a dream start for the Stones.
The next 15 minutes play however was very scrapy with
both teams guilty of giving away possession cheaply.
Normal service was resumed for the Stones after 20
minutes when Roxburgh was released by an incisive
Cornwell through ball and he finished well from just
inside the pealty area. Maidstone's third goal soon
followed with Brann netting his second and five minutes
before half-time the tie was virtually settled when
Brann completed his hat trick with the pick of the
goals on the evening, powerfully heading home a driven
Cornwell corner kick.
The Stones made changes for the second period which
did effect the fluencey of their passing game and
for awhile were grateful to Joe Dawson in goal for
keeping Whitstable at bay. The Stones did settle midway
through the half and increased the scoreline when
Roxburgh set Matthew Garner free and he placed his
left foot shot past the Whitstable keeper to register
Maidstone's fifth.
Within the final five minutes Roxburgh missed the
chance to make it six from the penalty spot but by
that time the games was over and Maidstone were secured
a passage into the next round away to the winners
of Chatham and Ebbsfleet under 18s.
