Tonbridge Angels U18 0
Maidstone Utd U18 2
Ryman Youth League 2/1/08
Maidstone Utd U18s recorded a well deserved
victory over local Kent rivals Tonbridge Angels
on Wednesday evening by a two goal winning margin
in the Ryman Youth League.
The game started fairly evenly in the first 15
minutes with Maidstone attempting to dominate play
with their short passing game, whilst Tonbridge
adopted a more direct approach looking to exploit
the Stones on the counter attack through their pacey
and ex-Maidstone forward Ashley Dann.
Maidstone's more controlled possession utilising
man of the match Colin Richmond in central midfield
allowed Stones forwards Ashley Perry and Miles Cornwell
to cause the Tonbridge defence problems and in general
outplayed their opposition.
All over the pitch the Stones looked comfortable
in possession and many moves were initiated through
the talented defensive line up of Rob Lyall, Ashley
Ulph, Rob Carter and Tom Parkinson.
Midway through the first half following a free flowing
passing move Colin Richmond was finally released
inside the Tonbridge area and he rounded the keeper
but unbelievably somehow narrowly missed the target
when everyone in the crowd believed he had scored.
Minutes later however the Stones did take the lead
after a spell of good pressure resulted in a free
kick deep inside the Tonbridge half. Ashley Ulph
floated in a well directed ball that Rob Lyall rose
above the Tonbridge defence and powerfully headed
home into the corner of the net. The lead could
have been increased before the half time break but
Jordan Busby in the Tonbridge goal managed to deny
the Stones and keep his side in the game.
In the second period the Stones continued to control
the proceedings with some very attractive passing
football which clearly frustrated their opposition.
Harry Lee in the Stones goal showed great maturity
in his organisation and positioning and dealing
with anything Tonbridge managed to deliver into
the Stones area despite only being called upon sparingly.
The Stones extended their lead after 20 minutes
of the second half when lively forward Miles Cornwell
eluded his marker on the right hand edge of the
penalty area before firing across goal into the
far corner of the net.
Following the Stones second goal Tonbridge pushed
extra men forward in an attempt to get back into
the game, but seldom troubled the superb Stones
defensive line up marshalled by the impressive Lee
in goal.
In fact Maidstone could have won in the end by a
more comfortable margin had it not been for the
Tonbridge woodwork and Busby in the Tonbridge goal
producing good saves from Garner, Richmond and Cornwell
before the close of play.
Team: Lee, Parkinson, Carter, Lyall, Ulph,
Garner, Richmond, Anderson, McParland, (Stubberfield),
Cornwell, (Brann), Perry, (Roxburgh). Subs not
used: Phillips, Allen.
Maidstone Utd U18 2 Kingstonian
1
Ryman Youth League 20/12/07
Maidstone Utd U18 recorded their second win
of the season in the Ryman Youth league with a superb
performance defeating title contenders Kingstonian
U18 by two goals to one.
The Stones welcomed back Rob Lyall and Ashley Ulph
into the squad and also were strengthened by new
signings Tom Parkinson and Luke Phillips.
The game was played at a very high tempo and it
was evident from the start the Stones were in a
determined mood to show Kingstonians they were a
better side than the current league position suggested
before the start of play. Early pressure and very
good ball retention from Maidstone forced Kingstonians
on the defence and Miles Cornwell and Ashley Perry
upfront caused problems for the visitors with their
good movement and link up play.
The Stones should have taken the lead after 20 minutes
when following good work down the right involving
the very impressive debutant Tom Parkinson, Matthew
Mcparland got free inside the Kingstonian area but
miss controlled at the final moment and was unable
to finish off a fine move.
Kingstonians seldom threatened the superb defensive
line up of Ulph, Lyall, Parkinson and Carter who
were in fine form but when Harry Lee was called
upon in the Stones goal to deal with a couple of
set pieces he looked very assured and dominent and
mashalled his defence well throughout the first
period.
The Stones took a deserved lead after 28 minutes
play when again good build up play down the right
enabled McParland to get free deep inside the Kingstonian
area and this time he make no mistake burying the
ball past the Kingstonian keeper - giving him no
chance.
The Stones went close to extending the lead before
half time with a couple of well taken free kicks
by Ulph that were well saved by the opponent's keeper.
He could not however deny Cornwell on 41 minutes,
when the striker forced his way inside the Kingstonian
area and rifled an unstoppable powerfull shot into
the roof of the net to give the Stones a well-deserved
second goal.
New signing Luke Phillips replaced Harry Lee in
the second half to make his debut for the Stones
and he was brought into early action tipping the
ball over from a well taken Kingstonian free kick.
He also made a good diving save to his left as Kingstonians
attempted to force their way back into the game.
To be fair to the opposition for the first 10 to
15 minutes they forced Maidstone back and their
pressure resulted in an unfortunate own goal from
Rob Carter as he attempted to clear a goalbound
effort.
Unlike previous weeks however the conceeded goal
this time galvanised the Stones team and they responded
superbly and once again took control of the proceedings.
With Marcus Anderson winning more than his fair
share of tackles in centre midfield it allowed the
more attack minded McParland, Garner and Richmond
to probe the Kingstonian defence.
In the final quarter the Stones could have added
two or three more goals with Cornwell, Ulph and
Richmond denied by good saves and Parkinson heading
against the post.
The performance on the evening warranted the three
points for the Stones and with more confidence evident
in the side a push up the table will be called for
in the New Year.
Team: Lee,(Phillips),Parkinson,Carter,Lyall,Ulph,Garner,
Richmond,Anderson,McParland,(Bryant),Cornwell, Perry,(Roxburgh).
Subs not used: Stubberfield,Humphries,Blosse,Heath.
Worthing U18 3 Maidstone
Utd U18 0
Ryman Youth League 10/12/07
Maidstone Utd U18's returned to action in the
Ryman Youth league after an absence of three weeks,
travelling away to Worthing U18.
The travelling squad was a little depleated as the
Stones were without Chris Smalling and Ashley Ulph
due to final England Schoolboy trials and Rob Lyall
included on first team duties. However the 14 man
squad did include new signings Harry Lee and Colin
Richmond and also included Matthew Garner, Craig
Roxburgh, Ashley Perry and James Humphries returning
after long term injuries.
The reshuffled Stones line up started the game well
with some good passing movements with new signing
Colin Richmond orchestrating proceedings in central
midfield. The Stones came close to opening the scoring
when good build up play down the right wing between
Miles Cornwell and James Humphries resulted in a
driven cross into the Worthing penalty area that
Richmond just failed to latch on to. Despite the
Stones good early possession they unfortunately
fell behind after 18 minutes play when their defence
was unable to deal with a superbly delivered Worthing
free kick that was diverted into the Stones net
from close range.
Once again the factor of falling behind when looking
reasonably comfortable upset the Stones rhythm and
confidence levels dropped, which resulted in a poor
passage of play and falling a second goal behind
before the half-time break again from failure to
deal with another Worthing set piece.
The Stones reorganised at the interval and switched
tactics introducing Ashley Perry on in attack to
partner Cornwell and rested Humphries who was suffering
from a slight groin strain. From the restart the
Stones again exerted pressure on the Worthing defence
with Perry and Cornwell combining well up front
and well supported by McParland and Richmond in
midfield. Within the early stages of the second
half the Stones created three good chances with
McParland,Garner and Cornwell going close but unable
to reduce the defecit.
As the game became more stretched with the Stones
desperately trying to get back into the game Worthing
did counter attack well on a couple of occassions
and the Stones were thankful for new loan signing
Harry Lee in goal as he pulled off a couple of good
one handed saves.
He was unable however to prevent Worthing's killer
third goal ten minutes from time when a Worthing
forward out muscled the Stones defence and finished
well off the inside of the post from inside the
penalty area.
Just before the end of play substitute Joe Heath
controlled superbly inside the Worthing area from
a McParland cross but was denied a consolation goal
for the Stones as the Worthing keeper dived bravely
at his feet.
The three goal margin flattered the hosts as Maidstone
played well for long periods in this game but were
undone in the main by the inefficiency to deal with
set pieces in the first half.
Team: Lee, Stubberfield, Blosse, Carter,
Bryant, Humphries,(Perry), Richmond, Anderson,(Heath),
Garner,(Roxburgh) McParland, Cornwell.
Maidstone Utd U18 4 Horsham
U18 0
Ryman Youth League 8/11/07
Maidstone United Under 18s recorded their first
win of the season in the Ryman Youth League on Thursday
evening at home defeating Horsham U18 by four goals
to nil.
The Stones fielding five first year U18s in their
starting line up began the game in determined mood
and with the wind at their backs forced Horsham
back for the majority of the first half.
Billy Smy making his debut in the Ryman League worked
hard up front alongside regular Danny Brann and
both threatened the Horsham defence, with left wing
back Alec Bryant providing some excellent deliveries
for his two front men into the opposition's penalty
area.
Maidstone went close to opening the scoring on 20
minutes when Bryant's curled free kick was met by
a Rob Lyall header that just flashed wide of the
target. Five minutes later Scott Ibbottsen hit a
thunderous 25 yard drive that the Horsham keeper
did well to tip over his crossbar.
The Horsham defence was finally breached on the
stroke of half time when 'man of the match' Alec
Bryant curled a long range left footed strike into
the top corner to give the Stones a deserved half
time lead.
Horsham began the second half with the elements
in their favour and for the first 15 minutes after
the restart applied pressure on the Stones defence,
however the back three of Jay Stubberfield, Chris
Smalling and Rob Carter, assisted by youngster Ollie
Stell in goal, firmly kept Horsham at bay.
After weathering Horsham's initial period of pressure
the Stones again took control and on 74 minutes
midfielder Scott Ibbottsen firmly headed home from
a Matt McParland free kick. The second goal for
the Stones seemed to extinguish Horsham's desire
to compete and on 81 minutes substitute Joe Heath
expertly converted inside the penalty area from
a left wing McParland far post cross.
Maidstone created futher chances but the Horsham
keeper pulled off a couple of good full length saves.
However after 86 minutes his clearence from the
edge of his own area cannoned back over his head
and into the unprotected goal off the back of Brann's
head as he charged down the clearence for a bizzare
fourth and final goal for the Stones.
It would be fair to say that on the evening the
Stones had the run of the ball, but only for the
first time this season. The team have played better
in previous games without any luck and lost, but
against Horsham they deserved the three points and
appreciated the change in fortunes.
Team: Stell, Stubberfield, Smalling, (Martin-Young),
Carter, Bryant, Lyall, Cornwell, (Heath), Ibbottsen,
McParland, Smy, (Rivers), Brann.

FA Youth Cup 28/10/07
The Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup
was as far as The Stones managed this year as they
were cruelly defeated by an 87th minute Lewes winning
goal. Losing this tie meant that an away trip to
Brentford U18 in the First Round Proper eluded The
Stones.
The two sides were evenly matched throughout the
game with both defences in outstanding form and
denying their oppositions very few attempts at goal.
In the first half Lewes had more controlled possession
but were only allowed two attempts on The Stones
goal. A far post header sailed wide from a right
wing corner mid way through the half and a shot
from just outside the area was turned away by Joe
Dawson at his right hand post.
The Stones best efforts were from set pieces with
the outstanding central defender Chris Smalling
going close with a near post shot from an Ollie
Blosse corner, and forward Dan Brann firing over
from outside the box from captain Ashley Ulph's
free kick.
The second half was as eagerly contested as the
first but The Stones were marginally in control
and started to pressure the Lewes midfield and defensive
areas on more occassions. In a good ten minute spell
midway through the second period Rob Lyall managed
to skip past a couple of challenges and get inside
the Lewes area, but unfortunately the Lewes keeper
was alert to the danger an dived at Lyall's feet
before he managed to shoot for goal. Then moments
later from a rehearsed Stones set piece the Lewes
keeper punched away with style from inside his six
yard box as Lyall challenged a driven inswinging
Matthew McParland corner.
Fresh legs were introduced for The Stones in the
final quarter in an attempt to finish the tie in
normal time but unfortunately with only three minutes
of normal time left to play Lewes counter attacked
down The Stones left and a right wing deflected
cross fell to Lewes forward Freddie Foreman inside
the area and he fired home the match winning goal.
The defeat was unfair on The Stones as a draw would
have been the correct result on the night, but it
was not to be and although the boys were bitterly
dissappointed they could hold their heads up high
for a spirited performance with maximum effort given
by all.
Team: Dawson, Stubberfield, Smalling, Ulph,
Mingle, Blosse, Lyall, Ibbottsen, McParland, Brann,
Cornwell.(Allen), (Bryant). Subs not used:

Maidstone Utd U18 3 Eastbourne
Borough 1
FA Youth Cup 11/10/07
Two stunning strikes from Ben Palmer sent Maidstone
United through to the next round of the FA Youth
Cup last night.
The Stones had the first opportunity to open the
scoring at Bourne Park, when centre-back Chris Small
met a Miles Cornwell cross, but the ball sailed
over the cross bar. However, it took just three
minutes later for Stones to break the deadlock,
when a Cornwell cross found striker Dan Brann, who
delicately chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Eastbourne fought back immediately, but Joe Dawson
was equal to the effort from Jamie Andrews. Maidstone
should have doubled their lead before the break,
when Brann found acres of space in the area and
his firmly struck volley hit the bar.
The second half started well for the Stones, as
they increased their advantage with Palmers
strike that lobbed Ollie Barton in the Eastbourne
goal from outside the area. Eastbourne full back
Lloyd Stevens had to be substituted midway through
the half with a badly broken ankle. Borough replied
on 65 minutes, when Darren Lok sprinted down the
right wing and let fly with a shot, which nestled
in the bottom corner. With 10 minutes to go the
game was stopped for an ambulance to come and pick
up the injured Stevens.
After the restart, the Stones continued to pressure
Eastbourne and scored the goal of the game with
five mintutes to go. Palmer picked up the ball in
his own half and dribbled for 20 yards before firing
a strike from 30 yards that dropped off the bar
and into the net. The Stones defence stood firm
for the remainder of the game with Smalling at the
heart of every break down. Maidstone will now face
Chatham Town or Lewes in the next round of the competition.
Margate U18 2 Maidstone
Utd U18 4
Ryman Youth Cup 4/10/07
Maidstone Utd U18's continued their recent run
of success in cup competitions with a 4-2 away victory
against Margate in the Ryman Youth Cup 1st Round.
The Stones with a bare squad of 14 due to late withdrawals
began the game in good heart, and could have been
ahead within minutes of the kick off. Alec Bryant
produced a well delivered left wing cross deep to
the back post but unfortunately Miles Cornwell's
volley from just inside the area just missed the
target.
The Stones suffered a set back on 14 minutes when
a needless free kick was conceeded on the edge of
their area and from the resulting direct free kick
keeper Ollie Stell was beaten at his near post.
The in form Stones were not detered by the loss
of the goal and continued to impress with their
free flowing passing football. It was from a superb
passing move involving 5 or 6 one touch passes that
the Stones equalised carving the Margate defence
wide open for youngster Ben Palmer to apply the
finishing touch.
Moments later the Stones took the lead when Bryant's
superb crossfield ball picked out Palmer's well
timed run and again he applied a good composed finish
when through on goal. This lead was given away ten
minutes before the half time break when confusion
in the Stones penalty area allowed Margate to score
directly from an inswinging corner kick.
After the half time interval the Stones dominated
possession and took full control, creating numerous
chances on the Margate goal, whilst looking totally
dominant and unbreachable in defence. It was inevitable
that the Stones would take the lead and midway through
the half Captain Ashley Ulph's fine run and through
ball found the lively Palmer free in the area and
he again finished in style to complete a well deserved
hat trick.
The Stones then hit the woodwork twice with Bryant
hitting a post and Rob Lyall striking the post/crossbar
from 2o yards with a superb strike. Substitute Jon
Ellis was also extremely unlucky not to add to Maidstones
tally with two well struck efforts well saved by
the Margate keeper and once being denied inside
the area unfairly and not awarded by the officials.
The tie was finally concluded in the 85th minute
when impressive central midfielder Lyall completely
ran through the Margate defence from just inside
halfway eluding three or four challenges before
slotting past the advancing Margate keeper to score
a superb goal and Maidstones fourth.
Team: Stell, Blosse, Smalling, Stubberfield,
Ulph, Cornwell, Humphries, Lyall, Bryant, Brann,
Palmer, (Roxburgh), (Ellis), (Martin-Young).
Bromley U18 1 Maidstone
Utd U18 3
FA Youth Cup 24/9/07
Maidstone United under 18 progressed into the
second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup after
defeating Bromley U18 at Hayes Lane on Monday evening,
and will now face Eastbourne Borough at home in
the next round.
The Stones took charge of the early exchanges and
looked eager and determined to progress in this
competition, and were infront after only 12 minutes
play. Lewis Mingle's quick throw in found Captain
Ashley Ulph in space and he flighted over a well
directed cross from the right that was chested down
and dispatched into the back of the Bromley net
by a tremendous strike from Matthew McParland on
the edge of the penalty area.
The Stones continued to press forward and really
should have increased their lead before halftime
with good efforts just wide of the target from Danny
Brann and Ashley Perry, and one strike from Miles
Cornwell that the Bromley keeper saved well. Defensively
the Stones bolstered by the return of centre half
Chris Smalling, were well organised and held a superb
defensive line which managed to catch the over eager
Bromley forwards offside on several occassions.
Early in the second half however Bromley Captain
and centre forward Mike Groves managed to elude
the Stones defence and converted well past the advancing
Joe Dawson in the Stones goal, which provided Bromley
an equaliser against the run of play. The goal spurred
Bromley on for a short while and they pressured
the Maidstone defence in belief they could go on
and win the tie.
Their optimism was soon curtailed, when the Stones
regrouped and responded with two quikfire goals
on 57 and 61 minutes. Matthew McParland managed
to break Bromley's offside trap and ended one on
one with Bromley keeper Joe Docherty. The keeper
saved McParland's first strike on goal well but
could not prevent his follow up shot from giving
the Stones back the lead.
Four minutes later Ulph flighted over a 35 yard
free kick from the right which eluded everyone including
the Bromley keeper and found the top corner of the
net to establish a three goal to one lead for the
Stones.
Danny Brann hit the bar soon after with a good effort
from the edge of the area and with five minutes
left on the clock Maidstone were awarded a penalty
when substitute Ben Palmer was deliberately kicked
by the Bromley keeper. The keeper redeemed himself
however as he pulled off a good one handed save
to denie McParland his hat trick from the resulting
spot kick.
The game ended 3 - 1 in favour of the Stones whose
overall excellent team display and committment deserved
the victory over their local Kent rivals.
Team: Dawson, Mingle, Smalling, Ulph, Bryant,
Cornwell, Allen, Garner, McParland, Brann, Perry,
(Humphries), (Palmer), (Stubberfield). Subs not

Faversham Town 0 Maidstone
Utd U18 6
FA Youth Cup 11/9/07
Maidstone Utd U18 returned to form in style
away to Faversham Town U18 in the FA Youth Cup.
Following a disappointing start to their league
season, Maidstone were determined to put things
right and make sure they were the side progressing
in to the next round against Bromley.
From the kick off Maidstone pressed Faversham back
deep into their own half and within three minutes
of play were infront when Alec Bryant crossed from
the left and influential central midfielder Matthew
McParland fired home from 12 yards out. This opening
goal was soon followed when again the Stones opened
up the Faversham's defence and centre forward Dan
Brann converted from close range.
The Stones were dominating possession and passing
the ball well and inside twenty minutes virtually
put the tie beyond Favershams reach when Bryant
sent Ashley Perry free down the left and Perry burst
into the penalty area only to be felled by a clumsy
Faversham defenders challenge.
From the resulting spot kick McParland converted
confidently into the corner of the net to give the
Stones a commanding three goal advantage.
Perry was replaced by Craig Roxburgh on 25 minutes
as he was suffering with a groin strain but this
change did not prevent the Stones from continuing
to dominate play. The Stones back three of Ulph,Mingle
and youngster Jay Stubberfield always looked assured
and in command in defence allowing the Stones midfield
the freedom to dominate the game and keep Faversham
on the back foot.
In the second half Faversham came out in the first
quarter and attempted to put the Stones defence
under more pressure, but despite their best efforts
were not able to penetrate or force their way back
into the game.
On the counter attack Brann and Miles Cornwell
went close to adding to the Stones tally. On the
hour the Stones introduced substitutes Jamie Allen
and Luke Rivers to rest and replace hard working
Bryant and James Humphries in midfield. Allen had
an instant impact when with his first touch of the
game his superb crossfield pass picked out Matthew
Garner's run into the box, and Garner cooly chested
past the advancing Faversham keeper before smashing
home into the unguarded net.
Five minutes later Allen broke free down the right
wing and fired a powerful low cross into the penalty
area which was met by a full length flying diving
header by Brann which gave the keeper no chance
and the Stones were five up.
With only minutes remaining Allen produced a very
skillful turn on the edge of the opponents penalty
area to deceive two defenders and play Roxburgh
free, but before Roxburgh could convert he was bundled
over and the Stones were awarded a second penalty.
Allen was given the opportunity to take the resulting
penalty kick for his skill which resulted in the
penalty award and he slotted the spot kick in style
to conclude a very convincing victory for the young
Stones.
Team: Dawson, Stubberfield, Ulph, Mingle,
Bryant, Cornwell, Garner, McParland, Humphries,
Brann, Perry, (Roxburgh), (Allen), (Rivers). Subs

Maidstone Utd U18 1 Leatherhead
U18 4
Ryman Youth League 6/9/07
For the second week running the Stones U18s
suffered a 4 goal to 1 defeat at home in the newly
formed Ryman Youth League.
Defeat on this occasion however resulted from some
very poor official decisions and not to the lack
of effort and commitment from the players.
In the early exchanges the Stones more than matched
the opposition with Matthew McParland and Miles
Cornwell on both flanks producing some good attacking
play.
However after 22 minutes of play the Stones suffered
their first setback in the game. Alec Bryant clearly
shielded the ball out of play for a goal kick on
the left hand side of the penalty area but to everybodys
surprise in the ground the referee awarded a corner
kick. The Stones defence still in disbelief at the
decision were guilty of losing concentration and
from the resulting corner kick lively Leatherhead
striker Simon McManus bundled the ball home from
close range as the Stones defence failed to clear.
The Stones following this setback continued to
work hard as a unit and had some good possession
but could not find a cutting edge to unlock the
Leatherhead defence. Unfortunately within ten minutes
of the initial setback they suffered a further poor
officials decision when McManus clearly handled
the ball to elude his marker and fire home from
inside the Stones penalty area. To rub salt into
the wounds Bryant was booked for his protest at
the poor decision.
For all their hard work the Stones reached the
half time break with a deficit of two goals which
was on the balance of play very unjust and a little
demoralising for the players.
To their credit the Stones came out from the half
time break fighting with substitute Ashley Perry
doing well as a target man upfront and causing the
Leatherhead defence problems. For fifteen minutes
the Stones pressed the opposition back and forced
them into making two early second half changes.
Unfortunately on 63 minutes the Stones were again
the subject of a further very poor decision by the
young officials. A Leatherhead forward was clearly
signalled on two occasions to be offside but the
referee ignored his assistant and allowed Leatherhead's
Tom Horley the chance to increase the lead which
was against the run of play.
The young Stones couldn't believe their bad luck
which moments later got worse with a second yellow
card for Bryant who was dismissed from play for
a mistimed challenge.
With the dismissal the Stones introduced Joe Heath
and James Humphries and reverted to a 3.4.2 formation.
The game became stretched with chances being created
at both ends. Joe Dawson in the Stones goal pulled
off a couple of good one handed saves and Leatherhead's
keeper Tom Gibson pulled off one fantastic save
from a 25 yard Matthew McParland strike.
The Stones eventually managed to force their way
back into the game on 74 minutes when Humphries
was brought down in the Leatherhead area and Captain
Rob Lyall confidently fired home an unstoppable
shot into the top corner from the resulting penalty
kick.
Chances were still being created at either end
but the game was finally sealed for Leatherhead
on 86 minutes when substitute Baz Ochan completed
the scoring on the night.

Cornwell, Smalling, Garner, McParland, Brann, Roxburgh,

Maidstone Utd U18 1 Tooting
& Mitcham U18 4
Ryman Youth League 30/8/07
The Maidstone United U18's played in their first
fixture in the newly formed Ryman Youth League on
Thursday at Lordswood FC.
The step up in level was apparent from the start
but the young Stones matched the opposition and
infact had the lions share of possession in a well
contested first half.
Matthew Garner nearly opened the scoring in the
first fifteen minutes when his strong run into the
Tooting penalty box allowed him a good shooting
opportunity but unfortunately his effort went just
wide with the keeper well beaten.
The Stones defence looked solid with Chris Smalling
in commanding form, and but for one Tooting effort
midway through the half never looked under too much
pressure.
The Stones managed to secure the goal their first
half play deserved on the half hour when Miles Cornwell
picked out central defender Rob Lyall from a free
kick and Lyall headed powerfully home.
The second half was a totally different affair however
with Tooting reverting to a 4.3.3 formation and
dominating play from the restart. The Stones had
to defend for long spells and the pressure began
to tell on the boys fittness levels and sloppy errors
resulted and possession time and time again was
conceeded to the opposition.
The Stones suffered the loss of central defender
Rob Lyall after 65 minutes with a reoccurring ankle
injury and had to reorganise in an attempt to keep
Tooting at bay. Unfortunately five minutes later
Tooting equalised with a spectacular long range
effort that sailed into the top corner of the Stones
net. This goal inspired Tooting further and soon
after they scored again when the Stones failed to
clear.
Two further Tooting goals followed before close
of play to give the opposition a flattering winning
scoreline which they celebrated in style and left
the Stones players depleted at the final whistle.
A positive that can be taken from this defeat is
that the boys now know from experience that they
have to work hard on their fitness levels to perform
for the ninety minutes required at this higher level
of football.
Team: Dawson, Mingle, Lyall, Smalling, Bryant,
Cornwell, Allen, Garner, McParland, Perry, Roxburgh.
